Gio stockings: when a nylon seam tells a story
In the 1940s nylon stockings caused a genuine fashion revolution. Lighter than the silk used before, thin and softly shimmering, nylon became a coveted wardrobe novelty. During the Second World War, when nylon was needed for military purposes, women even drew seams on their calves to create the illusion of stockings. After the war, garter stockings returned to everyday fashion.
Today this story is continued by the British brand Gio. Its vintage stockings are made in England using traditional knitting equipment and preserving the mid-century stocking construction. This is not merely a retro-style interpretation but a British textile craft that is still alive.
Fully Fashioned: why are real stockings with a seam made differently?
Authentic Fully Fashioned garter stockings are knitted flat, shaping the contour of the leg gradually. The edges of the fabric are then joined with a seam running up the back. That is why the seam is part of the construction, not just decoration. These stockings can also be recognised by the small keyhole-shaped opening at the top of the seam and by the marks left by the knitting shaping.
Gio stockings are made of 100% nylon without elastane. The thin 15 denier fabric barely stretches, so the size must be chosen using the manufacturer’s size chart. Unlike modern self-supporting stockings, they are worn with a garter belt whose suspenders hold the top band.
From Cuban to Manhattan: heel shapes worth knowing
The distinctiveness of vintage stockings lies not only in the seam. In the middle of the last century reinforced heels, which at first served a practical purpose, became a design detail in their own right. Different heel types give the stockings a character of their own.
RHT: a restrained choice without a seam

RHT stockings have a reinforced heel and toe area, and there is no seam at the back. Without a line running up the leg, the look is more restrained. It is a choice for those who like the vintage style without striking decorative details.
Cuban Heel: the classic to start with

The Cuban Heel is recognised by its wide, clearly defined rectangular reinforcement. This classic design, considered the foundation of the Gio collection, is especially suited to anyone trying Fully Fashioned stockings for the first time. It is loved for its simple, regular shape.
Point Heel: French charm

The Point Heel reinforcement gradually narrows and ends in a sharp tip. Also known as the French heel, it remains a favourite as fashions change. This design draws the eye not with intricate details but with its graceful, clean line.
Harmony Point Heel: a subtle play of shadows

The Harmony Point Heel keeps the tapering Point Heel shape but adds an outline reminiscent of a shadow. It is one of Gio’s first Signature designs. A single added detail gives the heel pattern depth and refinement.
Manhattan Heel: New York glamour

The Manhattan Heel design was inspired by the silhouettes of New York’s skyscrapers. A frame reminiscent of a shadow surrounds the heel reinforcement, and extra lines run along the sides. The pattern, evoking city architecture, gives the stockings opulence and a distinctive glamour.
Havana Heel: different proportions

The Havana Heel is a shorter and slightly wider version of the Cuban Heel. The rectangular heel reinforcement looks more compact here, yet remains clearly recognisable. Thanks to these proportions, this heel type is a good choice for shorter legs.
Memphis Heel: a diamond pattern for a bold look

The Memphis Heel stands out with an intricate diamond pattern surrounding the straight back seam of the stocking. The diamonds form a line resembling an arrow that catches the eye from afar. Such an expressive design will especially please vintage stocking enthusiasts.
Charleston Heel: in an art deco rhythm

The Charleston Heel design was inspired by the Roaring Twenties and their art deco ornamentation. The bold diamond pattern recalls that era’s love of geometry. These stockings are for those who want to stand out even through the smallest details of an outfit.
Retro stockings, Pin-Up aesthetics and today’s wardrobe
Stockings with a back seam became one of the most recognisable fashion accents of women in the 1930s and 1940s. Today they are often seen in Pin-Up and retro looks, where figure-emphasising silhouettes, high heels and carefully chosen details matter.
In the Gio collection, classic black, bronze, chocolate or natural shades allow a more restrained look. A contrast seam, heel and top band add more expression. When choosing, it is important to consider not only the shade but also the heel shape and the right size. Traditional nylon stockings require a little more care, but it is precisely their construction and historical details that give retro style its authenticity.
